Advances in Dentistry: What Is New in Dental Care
Dentistry has changed a lot in recent years. Visits are faster, imaging is safer, and many treatments that once took weeks now happen in a single appointment. Here is a plain language guide to the advances worth knowing about, why they matter for you as a patient, and what to ask your dentist about each one.

Same day crowns (CAD CAM)
What it is. Many practices now design and mill a crown in the office using CAD CAM systems such as CEREC. A digital scan of the tooth is turned into a ceramic crown by a small milling machine while you wait.
Why it matters. You can walk out with a permanent crown in a single visit, with no messy impressions, no temporary crown, and no second appointment. The fit is precise because it is built from a digital model.
Ask your dentist. Ask whether the office offers same day crowns and whether your case is suitable for one.
Clear aligners
What it is. Clear aligners are a series of removable, nearly invisible trays that gradually move teeth into place. They are planned digitally and swapped every week or two.
Why it matters. For many people they are a discreet, comfortable alternative to metal braces, and being removable makes eating and cleaning easier. Treatment is planned in advance so you can see the expected result.
Ask your dentist. Ask whether your alignment goals can be met with aligners, and how many months of treatment to expect.
Dental implants and full arch solutions
What it is. An implant is a small titanium post placed in the jaw that holds a natural looking crown. Full arch approaches can replace a whole row of teeth on as few as four implants.
Why it matters. Implants restore chewing strength, look and feel like natural teeth, and help preserve the jaw bone that shrinks after tooth loss. They can last for decades with good care.
Ask your dentist. Ask about your bone health, the full timeline, and whether a full arch option fits your situation.
Digital scanning and low dose imaging
What it is. Intraoral scanners capture a 3D model of your mouth in minutes, replacing the old putty impressions. Digital X rays use a lower radiation dose than old film X rays, and cone beam scans add 3D detail at a small fraction of the dose of a medical CT scan.
Why it matters. Care is more comfortable and more accurate. Digital models are easy to store, share, and reuse for crowns, aligners, and implant planning, and modern imaging keeps radiation exposure low.
Ask your dentist. Ask whether the practice uses an intraoral scanner and digital X rays.
AI assisted diagnostics
What it is. A growing number of practices use software that reviews dental X rays with artificial intelligence, flagging possible cavities, bone loss, and other issues for the dentist to confirm.
Why it matters. It acts as a second set of eyes, helping catch problems earlier and making the findings easier to explain to you with clear visuals. The dentist still makes the final call.
Ask your dentist. Ask whether the office uses AI supported X ray review and to see the images with you.
Laser dentistry
What it is. Dental lasers treat gum tissue, assist with certain fillings, and help with procedures that once needed a scalpel or drill.
Why it matters. Laser treatment can mean less bleeding, less discomfort, and faster healing for the right procedures, and often reduces the need for stitches.
Ask your dentist. Ask whether laser options are available for gum treatment or your specific procedure.
3D printing in dentistry
What it is. Practices and labs use 3D printers to produce models, surgical guides for implants, night guards, and even temporary restorations and dentures.
Why it matters. Printed appliances are fast to make and highly customized to your mouth, which can shorten timelines and improve fit.
Ask your dentist. Ask whether appliances such as night guards or surgical guides are produced in house.
Teledentistry
What it is. Virtual consultations let you speak with a dentist by video for triage, follow ups, and second opinions, often before you ever come in.
Why it matters. It saves time, helps you decide whether an in person visit is needed, and improves access for people with busy schedules or limited transport.
Ask your dentist. Ask whether the practice offers virtual consultations for new patients or follow ups.
Minimally invasive care
What it is. Modern dentistry aims to preserve as much natural tooth as possible. Options such as silver diamine fluoride can stop early cavities without drilling, and sealants prevent decay before it starts.
Why it matters. Less drilling means more of your natural tooth is kept, treatment is gentler, and it is often a better fit for children and anxious patients.
